Being proud is not a bad thing. Every year, marketers bring new and exciting ideas to companies. New trends in the industry lead to positive change which can increase business value. For example, at Geocomp it took months before I was able to implement a blog onto our website. I dedicated time and research to present to leadership the value a blog would bring to the company. Now, we have it up and running and employees are excited about sharing their expertise in the industry. It doesn’t seem right to give myself praise for something like this, but admitting that I made it happen after many months of planning, definitely gives me a sense of pride.
As humans, we typically don’t like to praise ourselves so we praise others who deserve kudos instead. Praising others is great, but most of the time we don’t give ourselves enough credit for individual accomplishments. Each year, SMPS Boston holds an Awards Gala to recognize marketing professionals in the industry for their individual or company-wide achievements. This year, the award submissions are electronic making it super easy to nominate & submit. You do have to purchase the submission, but the benefit far outweighs the cost! In all aspects of life, we are pushed to take ownership of responsibilities, opportunities, mistakes, and more. In addition to ownership, we should also take pride in our accomplishments. Creating a unique infographic or engaging video is something to be proud of. It takes a lot of time and effort to develop these marketing tactics and when they are successful, people should be recognized for them.
If you don’t feel comfortable submitting an entry for yourself, submit one for a friend in the industry or a colleague on your marketing team who did some exceptional work this year. No matter who you are or where you stand in the company, your work matters. Take ownership of it, but more importantly take pride in it!
