Kristin is a native of Michigan who relocated to Boston in 2007—beginning her marketing career just as the economy began to slide into the Great Recession. With little “real world” experience and a passion for writing, Kristin joined the AmeriCorps VISTA program and rode out the economic storm as a volunteer in national service for two years. While in nonprofit, Kristin learned valuable skills that would serve her well in her future career in AEC marketing: the ability to do more with less, a willingness to pitch in whenever needed, and experience in writing grant applications.
With these valuable skills under her belt, Kristin launched into her career as a marketing coordinator/receptionist at a small architectural firm in Back Bay and soon began advancing her way through Boston’s real estate and design industries. Her stint at Colliers International, an international real estate firm, allowed her to learn the ins and outs of the city’s largest commercial projects, major industry players, and the brokerage community—providing her a unique, holistic view of real estate development as a young marketer.
From there, Kristin returned to the AEC industry where she has held roles in firms both small and large, with varying levels of responsibility. To this day, she cannot say for sure whether she prefers the freedom and “all-in” attitude of the small firms, or the focused, intellectually rigorous responsibilities at a large firm. Through this well-rounded experience, she has had the opportunity to develop client pitches, supervise photo shoots, manage social media campaigns, communicate with the press, and direct business development strategy. But most of all, her work has revolved around her desire to write.
Kristin is currently a Proposal Manager at Elkus Manfredi Architects, a firm best known for their national and international mixed-use placemaking projects for a variety of institutional and private clients. In her role, Kristin leads the proposal process, developing and producing complex proposals and qualifications packages. She coordinates with both marketing and technical staff to ensure that proposals are well-written, contain accurate information, and are delivered in a timely manner.
At the urging of one of her supervisors, in 2016 Kristin joined SMPS Boston to find a community of marketers who dealt with the same struggles and triumphs of the AEC industry. Shortly after joining, she became a member of the Education Committee, where she was able to work with fellow committee members to develop educational events and programs for members and non-members from the AEC community. Kristin became the Co-Chair of the committee in 2017 and was incredibly honored to begin her term as a member of the Board of Directors in 2018.
In her spare moments, Kristin can be found oceanside. She embraces her personal mantra: “the cure for anything is saltwater—sweat, tears, or the sea.” She enjoys walking, running, and kayaking in her coastal home of Nahant, and has been known to spoil her family and friends by cooking up a mean (mostly) vegetarian feast.
