Name: Karen Wilson
Company: Sanborn Head & Associates
Title: Marketing Manager
Years Involved in SMPS: 14
Committee: TBD (rolling off the BoD as of 8/31)
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
I was a stand-alone marketer at an engineering firm when I joined SMPS in 2005. My internal resources for learning and growth were extremely limited so I began attending SMPS events to not only better my skill set but to surround myself with folks that could help me think through ideas and navigate challenges.
How has your SMPS membership benefitted your career?
Honestly, I’m not sure I would have continued being a marketer had it not been for my involvement with SMPS. Beyond all the learning opportunities and events lies a vast pool of talented, passionate and inspirational people that “get you”, welcome you without question, and support you whenever you lean in. They are an invaluable resource of great friends and colleagues. Being a part of this crazy tribe has, without doubt, shaped me into the confident and accomplished professional services marketer that I am today.
What do you work toward in your free time?
Thanks to a grade school art class, I became obsessed with doodling letters and penmanship. My journey to become a professional calligrapher started a few years ago while I was in between jobs. I am a member of the International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting and spend a good chunk of my free time studying letter forms and scripts, participating in envelope exchanges with people all over the world, and providing calligraphy services to people in the wedding/event industry.
Name: Rebecca Heavey
Title: Marketing Pursuit Leader, Northeast Transportation
Years Involved in SMPS: About 10 years in total
Committee: Membership Committee
What advice would you give to someone considering joining SMPS?
Take the leap, you won’t regret it! SMPS has been an ally in my professional development since the beginning of my career. I was fresh out of college without an ounce of experience in A/E/C industry at my first job. My boss and colleagues encouraged me to attend a few events and explore the committee opportunities, and I’m so glad I heeded their advice. SMPS gave me the opportunity to connect with professionals in my industry at all levels of experience. Any time I’ve needed to bounce an idea off a counterpart or needed strategic advice on career path movements, my SMPS network has been there for me. You truly benefit from the time and energy you put into your involvement with the organization.
What was your favorite SMPS event to date?
The SMPS Holiday Party is always a favorite! It’s usually held in January when everyone is relieved to have the holiday rush over and the ambitions are high for the upcoming year. It’s a chance to spread tidings and good cheer without all the other holiday stress!
What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?
I’m an Ex-Pat! Yes, that’d actually be on my resume, but it’s still one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. I moved to Ireland for three years to work for a large engineering firm in Dublin. I recently visited my Irish coworkers and friends about 8 years after I moved home. I found out that my old team now has a 35-person wastewater department as a result of one of the pursuits we worked on together. It was amazing to see the impact that one contract had on the office years down the road, and even more incredible to see how many people had jobs because of it. Definitely a great sense of fulfillment!
