How has your SMPS membership benefitted your career?

SMPS has helped me immensely in my career. When I first started in AEC nine and a half years ago, I didn’t really understand HLB’s place in the industry until I joined SMPS and hit the bootcamp. Everything came full circle, helped me understand more and advance my career – not to mention the tips and tricks SMPS offers to any type of marketer are incredibly helpful. What I really like most about SMPS is how welcoming everyone is. We are all here for the same reason, and the friendships I have cultivated along the way mean a lot to me – some of them were even at my wedding!

What is your favorite part about being a marketer in the A/E/C industry?

There is so much to learn, and so many people to meet. No matter what you went to school for, there’s always more to learn because our industry is ever-changing. We’re constantly adapting to new technology, trends, markets, relationships. How can that ever get boring? At HLB, we focus on 20 market sectors, so I’m fortunate to be able to focus on many different types of projects in our discipline of architectural lighting design.

What is something about your job, other than money, that has inspired you to keep working there?

Culture and transparency. People like to work with people they like, and there’s over 80 wonderful people at HLB. No matter who you ‘bump into’ in any of our seven offices, it’s a great experience, and we always have a good time. HLB also has a strong focus on transparency, which not every company can say, so that’s something that really binds us all together.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining SMPS?

Join, and then join a committee! Committees are a great way to immerse yourself in the organization, develop and practice your leadership skills, and get to know your industry peers.

What is your favorite part about being a marketer in the A/E/C industry?

I love the fast-paced nature of my job and the many different hats I get to wear as a marketer. From business development to social media marketing, no two days are ever the same and I am constantly learning new skills that I can use to keep my firm moving forward.

What do you work toward in your free time?

I am an avid runner and am working towards running all 6 Abbott World Majors Marathons (Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Tokyo, Berlin). So far, I’ve run the Boston Marathon twice and will be running the Chicago Marathon in 2022!
