How has your SMPS membership benefited your career?

Becoming a member has given me the opportunity to meet incredible people in the same field and understand the unique challenges that the A/E/C industry can pose to marketers. As a young professional, it is extremely valuable to have a group of people I can turn to with questions or seeking advice. SMPS has helped me learn about the industry and taught me how to be more confident as a marketer.

What is your favorite part about being a marketer in the A/E/C industry?

My favorite part is knowing that my work can make an impact. Providing marketing materials on green and Zero Net Energy buildings can be a small, but essential step in reducing greenhouse gases overall. Knowing that providing materials could assist in decreasing humankind’s carbon footprint excites me to be part of this industry.

What do you work toward in your free time?

I work towards relaxation in my free time. Although it may seem like an oxymoron, in a time when stress and deadlines are commonplace, it has been very rewarding for me to take deep breaths and disconnect from the world. Fortunately, with my schedule, I have the luxury of putting aside 2 hours a day to unwind and it has done wonders for my productivity and happiness. To me, it is important to take mental health and wellbeing very seriously.

Committee: Director of the CPSM Committee

Why did you decide to join SMPS?

Twelve years ago, I made a career jump from Business to Consumer to Business to Business marketing. As I was new to B to B marketing and the AEC industry, I wanted to learn as much as I could. My boss suggested checking out SMPS as she thought it could provide me with the industry understanding I needed as well as some peer connections. She was so right! After attending a couple of events, I became a member, and must say, it was the best decision of my life! Not only have I gained an enormous amount of industry knowledge, I  have also attended amazing conferences and events, met great people, built a great network, became a CPSM and am now Director of the CPSM committee and a member of the Board. It has been amazing, and I have made lifelong friends along the way!

How has your SMPS membership benefited your career?

I recently began a new job outside of AEC. I have to say that everything I have learned at SMPS as well as my CPSM credential were strong factors in my employer making the decision to hire me. Although they were unfamiliar with what a CPSM is, they were very impressed by it, and how we strive to continuously learn new skills to keep our certification active. The bottom line is everything we learn at SMPS is so valuable to not only the AEC industry but other industries as well. My new employer now supports SMPS which was key in my decision to change industries.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?

When I was in college, I participated in the Walt Disney World college program. For one semester, I lived in Florida and worked at Epcot in the Living Seas pavilion. It was a great experience to learn the ins and out of how this iconic company operates. Working in the park and being a part of Disney’s magic was not only fun, but very rewarding. I also got to meet students from around the world who worked in the world showcase, which taught me about different cultures as well. Additionally, my roommate was from Mexico and we spoke Spanish daily!  I am still in touch with some of them on Facebook which is very cool!
