Make It Happen in 2020

SMPS Holiday Party at Game on!You’ve set your goals for the New Year, and with our engaging, educational and fun programming, SMPS Boston is here to help you make your career goals happen.

We started the year off with our annual Holiday Party, and the Special Events committee hit it out of the ballpark with a game night success at Game On! With over ninety attendees enjoying an evening of appetizers and drinks, networking with the best in the A/E/C market, and lofting some balls in the batting cages, we also celebrated the winners of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Clothing Drive Corporate Challenge. Congratulations to the top three winners, VHB (1st), GEO Comp (2nd) and DPS Global (3rd). Thanks to all who participated in this third annual A/E/C clothing drive. Stay tuned for a full blog on the festivities by Kelly Brolin.

A SUPER start to the year, and we’ve got plenty more in store for members as this year moves along!

Fresh Start: Cleaning and organizing your email at the top of the list? SMPS Boston has an app for that, or specifically, Slack has an app for us to use! The SMPS Boston Chapter Members-only Slack workspace is rolling out at the end of January 2020. You will be able to chat with fellow members using the Slack app online, on your desktop or phone. Watch for your invitation to join the workspace, coming from the Communications Committee.

Star Power: Stay-tuned for our new energizing video blog series featuring Communications Committee member, Amanda Alcamo, talking with your fellow SMPS members and their managers about how SMPS has helped their careers, and as a result, their businesses.

Career Development: The Professional Development and Programs Committees have several programs scheduled, all geared to enable you to grow and develop your career – and benefit your business!

  • Recommit to Your Role on January 29th: Need a bit of motivation and support in refocusing on your role? Joanna Hoffschneider, ALEP, owner of Resolute Consulting, LLC will offer attendees tips on developing their identity to get noticed for the work they are doing, creating a mindset of continuous learning, leveraging professional associations, and philanthropy, and putting their career plans into action!
  • Join us on March 4th at GPI for Videography 101, an interactive video marketing training. Learn from Alex Enman, Creative Director for Bottle Tree Pictures, how to create and develop videos to promote your company’s activities.
  • Boot Camp is back on April 7th. The Committee has signed on several industry experts for this annual training, including Aurora Camarata, Tammy Jordan, and David Marino. Registration will open soon.
  • BD Live! is March 11th. We’re lining up even more industry experts to share their work experiences with attendees at this annual networking event.

Celebrate Your 2019 Achievements: the Special Events Committee is issuing the Call for Entries this month, and this year we are using the online submission management system, Submittable, to collect your entries. Easy for you to submit your entry and easy for our reviewers, it’s a win-win-WIN!

Give Back: Between the Outreach and Membership Committees, we can help you check-off helping others from your “To Do” list.

  • The Membership Committee is recruiting mentors for the revamped SMPS Boston Mentorship Program. You love your job, so sharing your industry experience and knowledge with a colleague to aid them in furthering their career is a cashmere-free Hygee waiting to happen! If you are a CPSM looking to become a Fellow, take this opportunity to complete the mentorship checkbox.
For more information, contact Membership Committee interim-director Jessica Harris or committee member Shannon Koop.
  • The Outreach Committee is making plans for another night at Rosie’s Place. Stay tuned for details. In the meantime, they have aligned us with two industry partners in supporting their events:
    • Construction Institute is holding the 5th Annual Women Who Build Conference at UMass Amherst, February 19 & 20, 2020.
    • BSA’s Emerging Professionals Network (EPNet) is hosting their annual Winter Warmer at Scholars Boston on February 20, 2020.

The CPSM Committee has seven candidates focused on taking their CPSM exam later this year. It’s not too late to join them. Current CPSMs with more than fifteen years in the AEC industry should consider their eligibility to become a Fellow (look back at that Mentorship Program paragraph above!). Reach out to CPSM Director Karyn Tirabassi for details.

NERC’s Vision2020 Conference is taking place May 6 – 8, 2020, in New York. Registration is currently open for this annual conference that brings together marketers and business developers from throughout the region for training and networking opportunities.

SMPS Boston is offering up to three NERC scholarships. Download your application and tell the SMPS Board how attending Vision2020 will help YOU develop as a marketer. Submissions are due March 23, 2020. Recipients will be notified by April 2, 2020.

We have so much more planned for our members and non-members, so continue to check our Events Calendar, e-flyer, and the Slack workspace when it rolls out.

Good luck to all who set their goals and are in the process of Making It Happen in 2020!
