SMPS Holiday Party and Clothing Drive

Since 2007, SMPS has proudly supported the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation (BBBSF), by encouraging members and guests to bring clothing donations to the annual holiday party.  Our donations totaled a few hundred pounds of clothes each year.  However, in 2017, to commemorate our 10-year partnership with BBBSF, SMPS challenged its members to do more. For the first time we invited Boston A/E/C firms to participate in an industrywide clothing drive challenge.  Participating firms asked their employees to bring clothing donations into their offices and BBBSF would pick up any amount, as many times as needed.  BBBSF totaled the weight that each firm donated and SMPS announced the winners at the holiday party. Once SMPS started this competition, the donation totals increased.  Our Chapter went from donating a few hundred pounds of clothing annually, to more than 8,800 pounds in 2018!

Now in its second year, 17 firms participated in our clothing drive challenge and our donation totals rose again to 10,402 pounds!  We announced the winners at the holiday party and are pleased to recognize these firms again on our website. The 2019 Clothing Drive contest winners are:

First place goes to GEI with 1830 pounds
Second place is Geocomp with 1530 pounds
And for the first time we have two third place winners, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger and VHB who each donated 1500 pounds of clothing.

In addition to the clothing donation, the SMPS Boston has made a $1000 financial contribution to BBBSF.

SMPS member’s generous support has helped fund mentorship programs for 30,000 children in the Greater Boston area, Southern New Hampshire and Maine. BBBSF’s placement agencies connect an average of 3,500 at-risk children per year with professionally supported mentors.

  • BBBSF donates coats, backpacks and school supplies to school-aged children in underserved communities.
  • BBBSF completes 350,000 pickups at homes annually and processes 10.4 million pounds of clothing and 4.5 million pounds of household items.

In short, for every dollar BBBSF spends, $1.37 is returned to the community.

For their effort and hard work, I want to thank each firm that participated. I would also like to extend a very special thank you to Steve Beck the Executive Director of BBBSF, and to Ken Higgins, Operations Manager, BBBSF for all of the amazing work they do supporting children in the New England community.  To see the list of participating firms and their donation totals click below.
